The Reserve Bank of India (RBI), in its second draft guidelines on banks' recovery agents, said, "If a customer has filed a complaint, the bank should not forward the case to recovery agents till it has disposed the complaint. However, in cases where the bank has appropriate proof that the borrower is making frivolous/vexatious complaints, it may continue with the recovery proceedings despite the pending complaint."

Plagued by complaints against the high-handedness of private loan recovery agents, State Bank of India is looking to directly hire 3,000 marketing and recovery officers whose job profile would include "soft recovery" of loans. These officers, vacancies for which were notified on October 1 and advertised in newspapers on Wednesday, would also market the bank's products, conduct pre-sanction survey, file applications, verify papers and soft recovery.

The company has fixed a 35-day deadline for disconnection due to non-payment of bills, the reply said. Banks may have to spend up to Rs 800 crore (Rs 8 billion) in training close to one million employees to comply with the Reserve Bank of India's proposed loan recovery norms. RBI has proposed that banks should tie up with the Indian Institute of Banking and Finance (IIBF) or organise programmes in their own training colleges to ensure that every agent passes the exam conducted by IIBF during a one-year period. 'Agents' would include agencies as well as bank employees.

Infosys Ltd on Thursday reported a 4.7 per cent rise in the September quarter net profit and raised revenue guidance after broadbased growth. Net profit of Rs 6,506 crore in July-September was up 4.7 per cent when compared to Rs 6,212 crore earnings in the same period last year. It was 2.2 per cent higher quarter-on-year, according to a company statement.
